A man charged with assault of two Irish backpackers has today been charged with murder after one of the victims died in hospital.
Homicide Squad detectives charged Luke James Wentholt, 31, with murder after an alleged assault in St Kilda East on August 26.
Victim David Greene, 30, sustained life threatening injuries during the alleged attack at Lynedoch Avenue and was being treated at The Alfred Hospital where he died last Friday.
The second victim, David Byas, 28, remains in a rehabilitation centre.
“A 31-year-old St Kilda East man was charged with the alleged assault of two men on 27 August,” Victoria Police spokeswoman Anita Brens said.
“Investigators have today upgraded the charge to murder and the man will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.”
Irish backpacker David Greene, 30, sustained life threatening injuries during the alleged attack and later died.
