Chemotherapy pricing under review

Cancer patients are being promised a major review of chemotherapy pricing and a one-off $30 million boost for cancer drugs in the federal government’s May budget.

Health Minister Tanya Plibersek is set to announce the review and extra funding in Sydney on Sunday.

It will include a $60 payment for every chemotherapy transfusion for an interim period of six months, News Ltd reports.

It says the decision is a reprieve for patients after an outcry over a federal government decision to lower the price paid to pharmacies for supplying the drugs.

‘To be able to find room in the budget for new medicines and treatments, it is essential taxpayers get the most out of every health dollar we spend,’ Ms Plibersek told News Ltd.

‘The Gillard government wants to ensure cancer patients don’t experience any interruption in their treatment while we get to the bottom of how much we should be paying to support the ongoing viability for chemotherapy providers.’
