WA govt plans 1000 new affordable houses

The West Australian government has committed $48 million towards building 1000 affordable houses below market rates.

In the joint federal and state government scheme, the houses will be designed to increase the supply of affordable rental accommodation.

Private developers and community housing groups will build the houses, with state funding used to subsidise rents.

Housing Minister Bill Marmion said the homes would be available for rent at more than 20 per cent below private market rates.

‘This funding will make a real difference to thousands of people looking for a place to live,’ he said.

‘It provides homes at significantly reduced rent for those finding it difficult to find a private rental.’

The homes will be built by June 30, 2016.
