3.4 earthquake felt in Branxton, as far as Muswellbrook

An earthquake was recorded in the Lower Hunter this morning with residents feeling their homes shake as far as Muswellbrook.

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded at Branxton at about 9.23am.
Geoscience Australia, duty seismologist Emma Matthews says earthquakes of this size are common in Australia.
“It’s just the release of a build up of stress in the earth’s crust and this is one of those earthquakes,” she said.
On the NSW Incidents Alerts – Weather Facebook page, a local resident known as Beryl from Muswellbrook says her home shook.
“I was just in my bathroom and I have a shelf with a lot of little glass fish and they all started to rattle and like a big boom type of thing and I thought that’s a little earthquake.”
She said it only lasted a few seconds.
“You get a shake and then a few seconds then you get another shake. We heard a rumble quite a loud rumble, you definitely know you’ve had something,” she said.
