SKorea police fire water cannons at FTA protesters

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean police have fired water cannons to disperse more than 2,000 protesters who were trying to break into the National Assembly as lawmakers debated a free trade deal with the United States.

About a dozen protesters were taken into custody Thursday after they scuffled with riot police surrounding the assembly building in Seoul. The protesters say the free trade agreement would subjugate South Korea’s economy and ruin their livelihoods.

South Korea’s ruling and opposition parties have so far failed to agree on the deal even though the U.S. Congress ratified it last month.

The ruling Grand National Party plans to push for ratification again next week. The opposition has vowed to block the deal unless it is revised.
