Russian president storms Nigeria

The Russian President Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev has arrived in West Africa’s Nigeria from Egypt on his four-nation tour of the continent. The former Chairman of the Russian Oil giant company Gazprom is the first Russian head of state to visit that country with a 400 strong business delegation.

The Russian envoy to Nigeria Alexander Polyakov told This Day newspaper that the visit of Medvedev is in response to a call to honor an earlier invitation by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua following talks on the sideline of G8 in Japan.

Polyakov said: “International issue will be on the agenda but the talks will primarily be about bilateral cooperation. We would like to give a very strong political impetus to our interaction in different fields.”

He added: “First of all the area of economy and investment would aim to bring the Russian-Nigerian partnership to a completely new level. Maybe it can be in strategic partnership.”

The Russian authorities have promised Africa most populous nation that they will help Nigeria in its “hunger” to acquire nuclear energy which the Nigerian Government said is for peaceful purposes and the exportation of the country’s rich oil to Russia.

The former Soviet State has not much to write about on their relationship with Africa when compared to China the world’s fastest growing economy and India. Economy experts observed that Russian is trying to regain its glory in the continent especially in the area of nuclear energy cooperation which will dominate talks in his four-nation tour.
