Kenya: $23m gender project unveiled

A $23 million joint programme between some UN agencies and the Kenya Ministry of Gender has been launched. Experts and stakeholders termed it as a big milestone in the gender equality and women empowerment circles.

It is a great partnership aimed at improving the government’s efforts in achieving economic development and empowerment in Kenya, noted Kenyan Minister for Gender, Esther Murugi.

The Regional Director of UNIFEM East and Horn of Africa, Meryem Aslam, said the programme comes with enormous advantages – capacity building and system improvement to quality assurance around gender specific issues. The joint initiative will be a model of success and bring direct benefit to the people of Kenya, Aslam stated.

The UN resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Aneas Chuma called on donor communities to embrace and fund the initiative as well as hold the UN accountable.
