Gunmen kill DRC journalist

Kinshasa – Gunmen shot dead a local community radio journalist in the volatile eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, media watchdog Journalists in Danger said on Wednesday.

Witness-Patchelly Kambale Musonia was killed near his home in the Nord-Kivu province on Tuesday when his attackers shot him point blank in the chest three times, the group said in a statement.

He was killed as he returned from his job at the Community Radio of Lubero Sud in the Kirumba area.

The killers “apparently waited for his return not far from his house”, the statement said.

Musonia led a programme last Friday in which a contributor criticised insecurity in Kirumba and alleged it was caused by a “band of armed bandits composed of civilians but operating with the complicity of the police”, the watchdog said.

He was the sixth journalist to be killed since 2007 in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a resource rich area that has been unstable for 15 years because of the presence of several armed groups.
