Man sells pet barramundi for eating too much

Barry the pet barramundi from Walkley Heights is eating so much food his owner is trying to sell him over the internet for $60.

Fish fanatic Dylan Baker, 18, got Barry after swapping two other fish with a fellow pet owner on sales website Gumtree three months ago.

But Barry’s monster appetite has him eating five times a day and he has already grown to 32cm.

“He’s a great fish but he is just getting too big now and eats heaps of food that I can’t really afford to keep him,” Mr Baker, who works part-time at a Pooraka pet shop, said.

“I feed him about 5g of frozen food daily and one live fish a week.

“I thought he would make a pretty cool pet.

“Barramundi do make good aquarium fish and can be pretty cool to watch, especially at feeding time.”

But Mr Baker warned against getting too close to Barry.

“They are aggressive feeders – they make violent and sudden movements – you kind of don’t want to be getting too close when giving them food.”

Mr Baker has put Barry back on Gumtree and is hoping someone will give him a new home.

“Whoever buys him will have to have a large tank because they grow really fast – pet Barramundi can grow to about 70cm long.”
