Transurban apologises for tunnel chaos

353tunnelToll road operator Transurban has again apologised for the closure of the main road tunnels on the CityLink tollway that caused traffic chaos in Melbourne.

CityLink’s twin Burnley and Domain tunnels were shut down from 4.30 (AEST) yesterday morning for more than 12 hours, with a computer breakdown blamed for the resulting gridlock which circled the CBD to a radius of 20 kilometres.

Transurban chairman LIindsay Maxsted says the decision to close the tunnels was based on their assessment of the risk inherent in allowing a tunnel to remain open with compromised safety systems in place.

Mr Maxsted says a full closure of the tunnels were the only option.
