A boat carrying nine suspected asylum seekers has been intercepted off the West Australian coast.
The custom vessel Hervey Bay found the boat west of Cocos (Keeling) Islands on Tuesday night.
The passengers will be taken to the island for health and security checks before being transferred to the Christmas Island detention facility.
People arriving by boat without a visa after August 13 run the risk of transfer to offshore processing centres on Nauru and Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island.
