Dark cloud over fine Australia day

Queensland celebrated its second Australia Day under brilliant skies today but the threat of more natural disasters is throwing a cloud over the festivities.

Weather forecasters have warned southern coastal Queensland could be in for another drenching next week.

The state Government declared Australia Day 2 after much of the state was hit by floods and torrential rain on the original January 26 date.

In an effort to give the message Queensland tourism is alive the government underwrote several promotions including those in the worst hit areas on January 26 – Bundaberg and Laidley.

The weather bureau’s warned another 200mm of rain could be dumped on southern Queensland next week but Mr Newman believes the state can cope.
