Hart promises no more clergy abuse

Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart says he’ll do everything he can to prevent any new cases of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church, saying it’s been hit like a brick by the scandal.

He says the church has had trouble coming to terms with the horror of so many priests offending, but the church is resolute in its commitment to address it.

The archbishop says he takes responsibility for ensuring there is no re-emergence of child sexual abuse in the church, that victims are treated fairly and compassionately, and that offenders are removed from contact with children.

Saying that he speaks on behalf of his fellow bishops and religious institute leaders, Archbishop Hart said the church is suffering because of the scourge of sexual abuse.
