Same-sex adoption rights for Tasmania

Same-sex couples in Tasmania will be able to legally adopt children, after the state’s Upper House passed amendments to the Adoption Act.

The Adoption amedement bill passed 10 votes to three, allowing same sex couples the same adoption rights as married couples.

The bill was introduced by Children’s Minister Michelle O’Byrne after the Liberal Party allowed a conscience vote on the issue.

Gay Rights advocate Rodney Croome is hopeful that Tasmania will pass legislation to allow same sex marriage by the end of the year.
