Ivory Coast: Two Presidents and Double Trouble

The political turmoil in Ivory Coast is making the headlines in several French newspapers. The outgoing president Laurent Gbagbo and his rival Alassane Ouattara each declared victory in last week’s election. They both claim to have taken office… The press reacts…

Most of the French press seems to be anti Gbagbo. Like the United Nations, Libération and La Croix say opposition candidate Alassane Ouattara has won the Presidential run-off.

Yet the two rivals have both declared themselves winner. They have started forming their own government, sparking further political unrest in the country. Le Figaro warns that violence between supporters of both camps could intensify.

In other news, Aujourd’hui en France published a new survey, showing that President Sarkozy’s popularity rate has increased to 34%.

The socialist party is also in the papers today. France Soir wonders if Ségolène Royal stands a chance in the 2012 presidential election.

And finally, Le Figaro reports about the arrest of a 16 year old girl who broke into Royal’s home.
