Somalis drag bodies in streets

Nairobi – It’s a gruesome display seen many times in Mogadishu: The bodies of dead soldiers dragged through the streets.

Somalis angry over the violence brought by 20 years of fighting say they do it in hopes of driving African Union forces out of their country.

The latest incident happened on Thursday, when the body of a fighter who appeared to be an AU soldier was pulled through the streets by a rope.

The most infamous occurrence was in 1993, when fighters dragged a US soldier through the streets after a disastrous US military assault into the Somali capital described in the book and movieBlack Hawk Down.

That episode hastened the US withdrawal from the East African nation.

The AU mission spokesperson says body draggings won’t result in an AU withdrawal.
