Claims high risk Qld prison overcrowded

Half of the prison staff at a private high security prison in Queensland are going on strike over a pay dispute and claims of over-crowding at the facility.

About 100 unionised staff, including some guards, at the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre in Gatton, west of Brisbane, will begin a 48 hour strike this morning.

United Voice union organiser Michael Clifford says staff are concerned that single rooms are being occupied by two prisoners and other inmates are made to sleep in common areas.

A Queensland Corrective Services spokeswoman says this is normal practice at the prison.

Mr Clifford says prison staff also want a 4.5 per cent pay rise, but Serco is only offering half that amount.
