Cameroon: Man buried alive over witchcraft

Angry villagers of Wone Bakundu, a village in Meme Division in the South West region of Cameroon have buried one Martin Njumbe Ikose alive. He was accused of killing his nephew through witchcraft.

Njumbe’s son, Pastor Zachariah Ikose of a Pentecostal Church in the capital Yaounde recounted how he watched helplessly as the angry villagers buried his father alive. He said his cousin had died a few days before and on Friday 2 July 2010 when they were at the grave side to bury him, some angry villagers suddenly grabbed hold of his father accusing him of killing the boy through witchcraft.

Ikose said they then threw his father into the grave where his cousin’s coffin had been lowered and began filling in with soil. Pastor Zachariah said when he tried to intervene, some of the villagers held him back. Despite the pleadings of his father, the villagers continued filling the grave with soil until he was completely covered and died.

“I watched in utter disbelief and shock as my father died in the cruelest manner. I could not do anything because I was bound by strongmen,” the Man of God told reporters.

Meanwhile, gendarmes have arrested almost half of the population of the village while investigation into the matter is ongoing.
