Mission to Madagascar – a new contact enhancement in Africa

The new mission, already the 7th of the African-Hungarian Union (AHU) starts on 9 November 2010, this time the destination is Madagascar, where doctors and volunteers have to face again challenging conditions. The members of this mission will help indigent people in the city of Antsirabe, 150 km from the capital.

The Honorary Consul of Madagascar, Randrianasolo Lalarison Richard and the consul secretary, Randrianasolo Daniella presented first hand information about the Malagasy circumstances (economy, politics, public health) to the volunteers during the preparatory training held in the AHU headquarter. The doctors, Dr. Judit Olácsi, otolaryngologist from Győr, Dr. Nóra Pintér, family doctor from Budapest and the volunteers, Virág Viniczai, interpreter, Gabriella Farkas, pedagogue with alternative teaching methods and Virág Kiss, humanitarian coordinator of AHU are now all prepared for the journey. However, why a pedagogue? Gabriella Farkas will carry out a survey among the students of Fananana Ambositrakely Primary School (which is part of the distant support program of AHU) to know which methods are the most useful to maintain the health promotion and epidemic prevention programs.

Dr. Imre Kis, family doctor from Tokaj could not join this training but his daughters were present in his absence.

After completing the documents for visa application, mission members raised lots of questions on security, living and working conditions, tasks and traffic. A video on a Malagasy health center was projected to the doctors, so they all know what to expect in Madagascar: poor facilities, lots of work. So experiences from the previous missions of AHU can be very useful for them.

Countdown has already started, soon the 7th starts… Activities and work performed by the 7th mission will be continually reported.
