Party of Central Africa’s Bozize wins overall majority

BANGUI (AFP) – The party of Central African Republic’s president won an overall majority in run-off legislative elections, garnering 61 of the 105 seats in parliament, provisional results showed Thursday.

In the past few days, some candidates in the deeply poor, landlocked nation had been using the press to publish results from their polling stations, while others declared themselves elected without waiting for the proclamation of the results by the Constitutional Court.

The opposition had called for a boycott of the March 27 poll and refused to recognise the outcome of both a presidential election, won by the incumbent Francois Bozize, and the results of the first round of the parliamentary poll, alleging “massive fraud”.

In the first round, 35 parliamentary seats were won, and 26 of those had gone to Bozize’s Kwa Na Kwa (KNK, Work, Nothing but Work) party. One seat was invalidated, after the results of the poll in January were contested.

In the second round 36 KNK candidates won a seat, the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) said.

Eighteen independent candidates were also elected, after eight had won a seat in the first round.

Seats for three constituencies are still outstanding.

The KNK and its allies had 80 of the 105 seats in the outgoing legislature.
