Tanzania postpones opposition trial

Arusha – Tanzania is dropping proceedings against 10 opposition party members for lack of proof and has postponed the trial of 19 other members until April 29, a prosecutor said on Friday.

Prosecutor Edwin Kakolaki said “investigations have been completed” and that he was dropping his case against ten members of the main opposition party Chadema for lack of evidence.

The trial of the other 19 Chadema members, among them the party’s leader Freeman Mbowe and secretary general Wilbrod Slaa, will start April 29, he said.

This is the third time the trial has been postponed.

29 members of Chadema were charged with illegal assembly on January 06, the day after police dispersed a protest march, leaving between two and five people dead.

The charges against the 19 include: conspiracy to commit an offence, unlawful assembly and rioting.

Slaa and one other accused are also charged with “raising discontent” after they publically called on President Jakaya Kikwete to resign.

Political protests that degenerate into violence are extremely rare on mainland Tanzania.
