Russian president arrives in Angola at end of African tour

Medvedev is hoping to capitalize on Moscow’s Soviet-era links with Angola as Russia seeks more access to diamonds and energy in one of Africa’s biggest oil exporters.

He was set to meet with Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos for talks to focus on expanding trade and economic ties, including in diamond mining, petroleum and power generation, the Kremlin said.

Angola is currently the head of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Russian oil company Zarubezhneft is seeking access to Angolan reserves and to boost ties with the state oil company Sonangol, the Kremlin said.

Russia‘s diamond monopoly Alrosa together with its Angolan partners is also prospecting for diamonds and has the right to explore for oil in the country.
