Mothers rally over payment cuts

actparlSingle mums are rallying at Parliament House in Canberra today in protest against federal government plans to shift 100-thousand single mums from parenting payments and on to the dole, despite two inquiries recommending the plan be put on the backburner.

The federal government wants single parents moved to the Newstart allowance when their youngest child turns eight, saving 728 million dollars over four years.

The Australian Council of Social Service says single parents will be left between 60 and 100 dollars worse off each week because of the changes.
