Licola in path of Victorian fire – CFA

The tiny town of Licola is in the path of a massive fire that continues to burn in Victoria’s east.

skynews 837049Benign weather conditions overnight have slowed down the 48,000-hectare fire with the main concern now Licola, which has been cut off and where about 10 residents and 30 firefighters remain.

The fire, which has destroyed about nine homes, is travelling northeast with a chance it will impact Licola.

‘Licola is now really in the path of the fire under the south-westerly winds we’re now experiencing,’ CFA state duty officer Gary Weir told Fairfax Radio.

‘The fire’s not doing much at the moment but it will probably ultimately move into Licola, hopefully not too fiercely.’

There had been emergency warnings for Licola on Friday but that has been downgraded to a watch and act alert, as the fire front works its way towards Mount Useful and The Springs.

The CFA is warning it has the potential to run up into the Macalister Valley.
