Institutionalized Racism Against Indigenous Denounced in Chile

The attorney for the Mapuche people, Lautaro Loncon, said on Sunday that in Chile there is institutionalized racism against indigenous communities.

Loncon´s statements were in response to the decision of the Court of Appeals rejecting a preventive petition brought by native communities against Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter.

The judicial body ruled in favor of Hinzpeter, who is challenged by indigenous organizations and opposition sectors that reproach him for blaming the Coordinadora Arauco Malleco (CAM), an organization defending the rights of the Mapuche people, as possibly responsible for a devastating fire in the south the country.

The Court of Appeal found that the reasons given by Hinzpeter about the alleged link between the CAM and the forest fires were not a threat as noted by Loncon, on behalf of the Mapuche communities.

It is the very institutional establishm, ent that allows the violation of indigenous peoples’ rights, Loncon said, after hearing the ruling.
