Chad – Oxfam aid worker kidnapped in Abeche

An aid worker in Chad with the UK charity Oxfam has been kidnapped in the eastern town of Abeche.

Chad’s Interior Minister Ahmat Mahamat Bachir confirmed the weekend abduction on Tuesday and said Chadian security forces were searching for the kidnappers.

The kidnapped worker’s name and nationality have not yet been released.

Abeche is a key garrison town for the Chadian army and police – and the UN peacekeeping force is also based there.

Last month, the Chad government asked the UN Security Council to withdraw these peacekeepers by the end of the year.

The 4,375-strong Minurcat force was deployed to protect hundreds of thousands of displaced Chadians and refugees from the Sudanese province of Darfur.
