More body parts missing in Kenya

Nairobi – Kenyan police on Tuesday investigated a claim that a body in Nairobi’s main mortuary was missing its ears and eyes, in the second gruesome scandal in the capital this week.

Police accompanied the family of the dead man in question to Nairobi City Mortuary, and what they discovered “was devastating,” a police officer said on condition of anonymity.

“The mortuary attendants cannot explain where the missing parts went and how they disappeared. They are saying the parts may have been eaten by cats and rats in the mortuary,” the officer added.

The explanation was rejected by the man’s family. A number of other families visited the mortuary on Tuesday to check their kin’s bodies were intact.

On Monday police arrested two men outside a Nairobi bank waiting to sell male genitals.

The two men pleaded not guilty to the charge of harming a dead body.

Police said the body parts were destined for neighbouring Tanzania where ritual killing and sale of albino body parts is rampant.

The selling of human body parts is rare in Kenya although belief in witchcraft is widespread.
