Students put Gillard to the test

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard was joking when she said facing a room full of students was the toughest part of her job.

But some curly questions from students at Hume Anglican Grammar certainly kept her on her toes on Tuesday.

Students of the outer Melbourne school gave their curiosity full play, wanting to know who was her favourite political leader, her favourite country and how to put an end to bullying.

She nominated United States President Barack Obama as her favourite leader, before quickly adding Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Ms Gillard said supporting teachers was one way to combat bullying.

She nominated Australia as her favourite country, saying she didn’t have time to go sightseeing in the countries she visited.

Perhaps the toughest question came from a year 12 student who wondered if she would be able to do her course after cuts to university funding.

But the prime minister assured her universities were being adequately funded.
